O'Keeffe launches probe into university president's house

The Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe has launched an investigation to ensure no taxpayers' money was spent by the University of Limerick to build a home for its president.

The University of Limerick has already spent €1.1m on the five-bedroom property on its campus which Professor Don Barry will move into next month.

University teachers and student groups have criticsed it as extravagance at a time when student registration fears have soared and the university has debts of €3m.

Mr O'Keefe said he understands a donation was made to the university but he wants to ensure the taxpayer is not footing the bill for any of it.
