NI jobless figure rises by further 1,000

The number of people officially listed as jobless in the North has increased by another 1,000 over the past month, according to figures out today.

Almost 54,000 people are now unemployed, an increase of almost 80% over the past year.

This is the largest annual rise since officials began compiling seasonally-adjusted figures 14 years ago.

The unemployment rate for the three months leading up to August 2009 is estimated at 7%.
