Samsung has unveiled what it claims is the first smartwatch capable of making and receiving calls without requiring a mobile phone to be nearby.

Samsung has unveiled what it claims is the first smartwatch capable of making and receiving calls without requiring a mobile phone to be nearby.

Previous models have had to be linked to a handset, but Samsung says the Gear S will have buil-in 3G connectivity, having the ability to connect to 3G and 2G networks on its own.

Users will still havethe option of pairing it with a smartphone, however.

The 'Gear S' is due in the shops in October. Its price has not been revealed as yet. Rival LG will also launch a new smartwatch this autumn.

There are also rumours that Apple will unveil a smartwatch in tandem with its iPhone 6 next month.
