First contact: Video of Amazon tribe meeting outsiders for the first time

In Brazil, there are still large swathes of rainforest that serve as reserves, where uncontacted Amazonian tribes live.

Brazil's department that deals with indigenous peoples, FUNAI, released footage this week of a face-to-face first contact scenario.

The raw footage is really quite fascinating, as the Brazilians offer a gift of food to begin conversation and smooth over a natural wariness.

The indigenous tribesmen crossed from Peru into Brazil, actively seeking to make contact - a rare occurrence. Ordinarily, they are left alone by the Brazilian government.

The tribe in question made contact with native Brazilian people called the Ashaninka in June. This video, released by FUNAI, comes from the second day of that meeting.

The interpreter in the video is a Ashaninka native, who shares a similar language. It is believed they were seeking aid in defending themselves from other outsiders.

Local experts believe the tribe may be travelling further afield due to threats from loggers and drug operators working illegally in the region.

Several were suffering flu-like symptoms, according to reports, and a medical team was dispatched to treat them.
