Owl of the day…
This great picture comes to us from Finland, where kayaker Pentti Taskinen happened upon a rather sodden-looking owl as he crossed a lake - and so offered the poor fella a lift.
As the Ilta Sanomat newspaper reports, Taskinen was paddling across Lake Tuusula on Sunday when he heard a commotion in the water.
"At first I thought it was an otter," Taskinen said. "But then I paddled closer and lo and behold, found the owl in the middle of the lake, around 500m from shore."
The waterlogged owl would almost certainly have died of hypothermia had Taskinen not happened along, but how he got there is a mystery. Some commenters speculated that he may have gotten lost in fog while others claimed he could have been mobbed by crows and forced into the water.
However he got there - he owes the kayaker one for getting him out.
