The Mayor of Sligo has paid tribute to Westlife following the news that the band are to split up.

The Mayor of Sligo has paid tribute to Westlife following the news that the band are to split up.

Cllr Rosaleen O'Grady said she was shocked to hear the news, but said it was only the beginning of a new era in their career.

Westlife were given the Freedom of Sligo during her pervious term as Mayor in 2005-2006.

Cllr O'Grady told Ocean FM that the band had been wonderful ambassadors for Sligo.

"I know them from when they were growing up as children. They're very special to me," she said.
