Dukes hints at developments in Fingleton bonus row

The issue of the €1m bonus paid to Irish Nationwide chief executive Michael Fingleton's may be coming to a head, Anglo chairman Alan Duke has hinted.

Anglo Irish Bank - which has taken over Irish Nationwide - has asked Mr Fingleton to repay the money and to return the €11,500 watch he received on his retirement.

Chairman of Anglo Alan Dukes told reporters this morning that he expects some development on the issue in the coming days.

"Watch this space…There will be one or two things coming out of that in the next couple of days I think," he said.

Enterprise and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton later said that any move to repay the money would be welcome.

"I've heard that Alan Dukes made some comments and certainly it would be the Government's that bonuses were wholly inappropriate - but this is a matter obviously between Alan Dukes and of course Michael Noonan would be the line Minister responsible," he said.

"Other than to say that it would be heartening to know that progress is being made."
