The Government's emergency response committee will meet again today as water rationing continues across several counties.

Floods in the south, and further heavy snow showers in the east, south-east and midlands overnight are causing more problems for motorists this morning.

Many householders still have to contend with a reduced water supply because of dwindling levels in the country's reservoirs.

People are being urged to conserve as much water as possible, in order to prevent further reductions in water pressure and water being cut off.

A combination of ice and flooding is causing problems for motorists in the south.

Fermoy, Mallow and parts of Cork city have been affected after rivers burst their banks following yesterday's rainfall.

Freezing temperatures have led to black ice on a number of roads.

Meanwhile, the search will resume at first light for a number of containers which fell overboard from a ship off the south coast yesterday.

One contained a dangerous chemical called sodium bromate. The Coastguard fears the containers could pose a threat to other vessels in the area.
