The Irish climbing community has reacted with shock and devastation to the deaths of two Irish climbers on Mont Blanc.

Colm Ennis (aged 37) from Waterford and Peter Britton (aged 55) from south Tipperary, are believed to have died after a fall on the French mountain yesterday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to their families.

Mont Blanc mountain guide Michael Dubois says the men died at a technical and difficult part of the mountain that was crowded.

"Yesterday, there were a lot of people and when there are too many people en route, it can be dangerous," he said.
