March 'safest month ever' on Irish roads
March was the safest month on Ireland's roads since records began more than 40 years ago, according to data released today.
The Department of Transport said there were 11 fatalities during the month, bringing the total number of road deaths this year to 40, down 17 on this time last year.
“Road deaths are not only tragic, they are avoidable," Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said.
"The 40 families who lost loved ones on Irish roads since the start of this year, know the heart ache that road accidents bring.
"Many more people have also sustained very serious, life-altering injuries as a result of road accidents since the start of the year," Minister Dempsey added.
"As we approach a very busy Easter weekend, many people will be taking to the roads. I am urging everyone, irrespective of whether or not you are travelling long or short distances, to please take care."
"One life lost, is one too many. "
