Mater hospital representative says it 'cannot comply' with abortion legislation

A priest on the board of governors of the Mater hospital in Dublin said it "cannot comply" with the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.
Speaking to the Irish Times, Father Kevin Doran said the hospital cannot carry out abortions because it goes against its Catholic ethos.
The Mater is not a maternity hospital, but it is one of the 25 "appropriate institutions" named in the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act where abortions may be carried out to save the life of a pregnant woman.
The Mater is managed by a board of governors, which is independent of the HSE.
Meanwhile consultant obstetrician Peter Boylan has been reacting to the comments by Father Kevin Doran.
The former Master of the National Maternity hospital said the church needs to back off and leave the medical care of Irish women to doctors.
