The organs of a 20-year-old man who lost his life after he was assaulted in Co Westmeath two days before Christmas will be donated in an effort to save the lives of others.
Andrew Dolan, a student from Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim, died in hospital last night from injuries he suffered during an attack in Mullingar on December 23.
Three people arrested for questioning shortly after the incident were later released without charge. Files are now being prepared for the DPP.
Investigating officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Councillor in Carrick-on-Shannon Gerry Reynolds, who knows the Dolan family, confirmed that Andrew carried an organ-donor card.
"Andrew carried a donor card. It certainly gives some (comfort) to his family that their son had thought this through and if there was ever a situation where he could help bring life to other people, that he would do it.
"Apart from being a very fine young man, he was a brave, intelligent, thoughtful young man," he said.
