Post-mortem finds man in Garda custody died of natural causes

A post-mortem has been concluded on the body of a man who died after being arrested by gardaí in Waterford yesterday.

A post-mortem has been concluded on the body of a man who died after being arrested by gardaí in Waterford yesterday.

The 59-year-old was detained shortly after 3pm and was rushed to hospital shortly afterwards. He died before 4pm yesterday.

Gardaí in Waterford have launched a full internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

It is understood the man was slightly unwell when he was arrested in the city, but gardaí say he refused an ambulance and was taken to Waterford Garda Station.

After a short time in custody, his condition worsened and he was rushed to Waterford General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The post mortem on the man's body concluded that he died of natural causes.

Further toxicology tests are expected to be carried out as part of the investigation.
