There are reports this morning that Child Benefit will be cut by at least €10 in the Budget.

The cut in the existing €140 allowance would be across the board regardless of age or the number of children in the family.

It comes despite repeated promises not to reduce primary welfare rates.

The Sunday Times has quoted the chief executive of children's charity Barnardos, Fergus Finlay, as saying he is "horrified" at the reports.

It is believed the Government hopes the cut will result in savings of around €110m on the social welfare bill.
