A senior economist with the ESRI has recommended the taxing of child benefit in a bid to encourage people to get back to work when the economy recovers.

Professor John Fitzgerald has also suggested that the Government should examine the fairness of exempting the old age pension from cuts.

In an address to the McGill summer school in Glenties, Donegal he said pensioners have been among the biggest beneficiaries from the recession - because their income has been left untouched.
