Shopping around can save €1,300 on car insurance, survey reveals
A new survey has revealed that some drivers can save more than to €1,300 by shopping around for car insurance.
The research was carried out into the top eight insurance companies in Ireland by the National Consumer Agency.
It also showed that one in four consumers are still not shopping around for their insurance.
Men and women are however now being quoted equally for their insurance, following an EU gender ruling earlier this year.
"For one policy, one profile, a student with a full licence and driving experience of less than one year was a difference of €1,335 for third-party fire and theft," said Fergal O'Leary from the National Consumer Agency.
"Across all of the eight profiles we looked at, there were real differences to be found, which does show that consumers who get a couple of quotes, either online, or by telephone, can stand to save a significant amount of money."
There was a difference of €595 on third-party, fire and theft cover and up to €625 on fully comprehensive cover between the lowest and highest quote for a 25-year-old teacher from Kilkenny with a full licence for three years.
The survey also found a difference of €205 between the highest and lowest provider for a 50-year old with six penalty points from Co Cork.
