Stage actress Susan Fitzgerald passes away

Tributes are being paid to one of Ireland's best known stage actresses, Susan Fitzgerald, who has passed away after an illness.

The 64-year-old died after fighting cancer since May 2011.

She worked as an actress for more than 40 years, appearing in a number of plays in the Abbey including 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' and 'A Midsummer Night's dream'.

Her television work included roles in Fair City, Rebel Heart and Bachelor's Walk.

Her husband, Michael Colgan, the Managing Director of the Gate Theatre, said she was an extraordinary woman.

"It has been a huge outpouring of love, and people texting and mentioning plays, their favourites," he said.

"I'm getting texts from people I don't know - so Susan made a big impact.

"I've just had a gaze at her CV, and just her stage career, not mentioning her films or TV, and it is staggering … the amount of roles that she played, and all of them with effort and ease and grace."
