It has emerged that the pedestrian killed in a Portlaoise road accident last night was Tipperary County Councillor Willie Kennedy.

It has emerged that the pedestrian killed in a Portlaoise road accident last night was Tipperary County Councillor Willie Kennedy.

Councillor Kennedy, from Glastrigan, Borrisoleigh was struck on the N80 in around 8.30pm last night.

He had been attending a funeral when the accident happened.

The 64-year-old was part of the Lowry team and represented the Thurles-Templemore municipal district.

Councillor Kennedy is survived by his wife and three children.

He was first elected to the Local Authority in 1985.
