TUI warn of possible strike action before General Election

The Teachers Union of Ireland is warning of the potential for strike before the General Election.

It is to ballot it’s 15,000 members on a campaign of industrial action over issues including the FEMPI (or Fempy) bill on the restoration of public service pay and pensions.

The Bill is to restore remuneration to public servants including gardaí and teachers.

But TUI president, Gerry Quinn, has described the bill as draconian and punitive and says it seeks to force unions into the Lansdowne Road Agreement.

Gerry Quinn has said they want the issue addressed by the current government: “We want the current Government to address the failings, so in terms of the action it will escalate, it will exhaust all reasonable avenues,”

“But, if we don’t get into a negotiated situation to get a reasonable resolution to these problems, then you are talking about strike action, before people vote in the General Election early next year.”
