The RNLI at Ballycotton was called out yesterday evening to help a dolphin that was stranded due to extreme high tides in a bogland.

The volunteer crews on both the all-weather and the inshore lifeboats went to the dolphin's aid at 7.12pm following a request from Ballycotton Coastguard.

Ballycotton RNLI crew members Rupert Hugh-Jones and William Sliney went into the water and helped the dolphin back to deeper waters in Ballycotton Bay.

Ballycotton RNLI Coxswain Eolan Walsh said: "The dolphin appeared to be quite young and may have possibly been separated from its pod.

"On arrival, two of the volunteer crew members entered the water and swam alongside the dolphin and guided it towards open water. This was an unusual request for Ballycotton RNLI but we were happy to assist."
