The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed has urged the Government not to abandon social welfare increases in an effort to offset the economic slowdown.

The organisation has said it is concerned that the recent spate of high-profile job losses could knock social welfare increases off the Government’s agenda for the next budget.

The foot-and-mouth crisis, job losses and the general economic slowdown will mean the Government has less money to spend at budget time, but INOU general secretary Tony Monks said the priority must be to continue to improve unemployed people’s standard of living and to take the low-paid out of the tax net.
