Mel Gibson says he's considering quitting acting to produce films instead.
The Hollywood actor says he's tired of doing location shoots away from home and doesn't want to be a "star".
It means his starring role as a Vietnam War Lieutenant in forthcoming movie We Were Soldiers could be one of his last.
Mel said: "Things aren't the same now that I'm 46 as they were when I was in my twenties. I used to do long location shoots, now I don't want to work away from home. When I'm filming, I go home every weekend. Being away from the family is not conducive to a happy life.
"Filmmaking is what I love now. I don't want to be the "star" of a movie anymore, I want to be part of the movie-making process from the other side of the camera."
He adds that he wants to keep his family together and safeguard his seven children against becoming "spoilt brats".
"I don't lavish my millions on my children but I don't let them starve either. You have to make sure your children are healthy and they have a roof over their heads and that's it," he says.
"Beyond that, they have to strive to make things happen. My children understand that. And they also know that I'm not being stingy or mean. I just believe that if they really want something, they have to go out and work for it.
"These days I'm happiest staying at home with my children. I quite like being a boring old git."
We Were Soldiers is released here on March 8.
