The cost of hiring people to cover supervision and substitution duties in secondary schools is expected to be €6m over budget, according to reports this morning.

The cost of hiring people to cover supervision and substitution duties in secondary schools is expected to be €6m over budget, according to reports this morning.

The Government hired the temporary staff in March after members of the Association of Secondary Teachers withdrew from the voluntary duties.

The measure was expected to cost €11m, but this has already risen to €17.8m and could rise farther because supplementary allocations have still to be paid.

School managers and Department of Education officials are expected to meet to discuss the situation next week.
