Radzinski aims for Euro spot

Fulham striker Tomasz Radzinski believes a place in Europe is a realistic target for next season – provided boss Chris Coleman continues to strengthen over the summer.

Fulham striker Tomasz Radzinski believes a place in Europe is a realistic target for next season – provided boss Chris Coleman continues to strengthen over the summer.

After the euphoria of securing the club’s best top-flight finish in 2004, Fulham were never in the reckoning for a UEFA Cup spot last term as a string of poor results saw them sucked into the relegation battle.

Radzinski’s ambition remains undiminished but the Canada international understands further signings – Heidar Helguson, Jaroslav Drobny and Ahmad Elrich have already arrived at Craven Cottage this summer – are required.

“I think you always have to aim for Europe. I want to play European football with every team I play for,” he told the club’s official website, www.fulhamfc.com.

“Fulham finished ninth the season before last and the target then was to finish a few places higher.

"That didn’t happen but there’s no doubt that this team has the potential to do better than ninth.

“If we can bring in a few new faces to strengthen the squad, I think we’ve got a big possibility to achieve something. You’ve got to be ambitious at the beginning of the season, and I think everyone feels like that.”

Radzinski signed for £1.75m (€2.6m) from Everton last summer and finished the campaign as Fulham’s second highest scorer behind Andy Cole with 11 goals.

The 31-year-old made a slow start to life at Craven Cottage and when he was eventually given a run in the starting line-up, he was deployed as an advanced right midfielder in Coleman’s unpopular 4-5-1 formation.

“Obviously I only scored six goals as a striker and that wasn’t pleasing, but playing 95% of the season on the right side perhaps makes it not so bad,” he said.

“I think that if someone had told me at the beginning of the season I was going to play wide and score six goals, I’d have settled for that. I have 11 in total, including all the cup goals, so that’s okay.

“The season didn’t start the best for me, then around December and January time I had a good spell in the team and was scoring regularly. Then in February I was out again, and then towards the end I was back in again!

“So it has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for me. But at the end of the day, we have a lot of good players and I’m just happy to be part of things at Fulham.

“I could have scored more goals, and should have really, but I know my position in the team now, I know better how to play that position and how to do my job and if it’s going to happen again next season, I’m going to be better prepared.”

Fulham eventually finished 13th after spending much of last season fighting to preserve their Barclays Premiership status and Radzinski was encouraged by their end-of-season run which produced three wins from four matches.

“Our performances were much, much better at the end of the season. The togetherness in the team was there and everybody wanted to work for each other. That’s very important,” he said.

“It’s something really positive for Cookie (Coleman) to build on. The team is there, the team is willing, and we know what we want. So it’s going to be great to see the same bunch of lads with a few fresh faces, and build from where we left off.”
