Rusedski counts cost of punishing schedule

Greg Rusedski counted the cost of having to play two matches in one day when he failed to reach the final of the Heineken Open in Auckland.

The British number two, successful earlier in his quarter-final against Stefan Koubek, then lost his semi-final to Spaniard Francisco Clavet.

He went down in straight sets - 6-3 6-2 - having had to go back on court within hours of his last-eight victory.

Rusedski had booked his place in the semis with a hard-fought victory over Austrian Koubek.

Rain delays this week forced the Brit to do battle with a hectic schedule over the past two days as he sought to complete his preparation for the Australian Open.

He showed no sign of weakness in getting the better of Koubek 6-2 5-7 7-5 but was unable to keep his run going against Clavet.

Friday's other quarter-final winners were second seed Dominic Hrbaty - who beat Thomas Johansson 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 - and Spaniard Julian Balcells, a 6-3 6-4 victor over Glenn Weiner.
