The Tungsten Carbide division of Boart Longyear, which makes specialised hard material products in Shannon, Co Clare is to close in April, with the loss of 40 jobs.

The Tungsten Carbide division of Boart Longyear, which makes specialised hard material products in Shannon, Co Clare is to close in April, with the loss of 40 jobs.

The company which was established in the town in 1960, is blaming a worldwide decline in its markets.

Meanwhile, 385 workers from Ballinasloe electronics firm, Square D, were also laid off today.
