Officials at Redcar were left with no choice but to abandon this afternoon’s meeting after a deluge of overnight rain left standing water on the track.

An inspection was called for 8.30am this morning, and clerk of the course James Sanderson admitted that he needed the weather to change for the fixture to have a chance, but he was out of luck.

“Racing is off, I’m afraid,” said Sanderson.

“It’s a shame, but there are areas of water standing on the track, and we had 22mm of rain in the last 24 hours, the bulk of which came overnight.”
