Moon team seeking Cup clues

Connections of Purple Moon are hoping his run in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup will give them a good pointer to his chances in Melbourne.

Connections of Purple Moon are hoping his run in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup will give them a good pointer to his chances in Melbourne.

Luca Cumani’s four-year-old contests the mile-and-a-half feature ahead of his planned assault on the Emirates Melbourne Cup next month, for which he is the general 7-1 favourite.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup featured subsequent Melbourne first and second Delta Blues and Pop Rock and Cumani’s wife, Sara, is keen to see how Purple Moon fares.

“Until we’re in this atmosphere, until we get a handle on how he behaves tomorrow at the races and until he actually races and we see what the competition is like, it’s all a bit of an unknown,” she said.

Cumani’s daughter Francesca also travelled with the Galileo gelding and she reports him to be “as well as he has been before his races in England”.

“He’s not the kind of horse that gives you obvious signs. Before the Ebor I thought he was a bit flat and not particularly well in himself but then he goes and wins like that,” she said.

“He’s giving me all the right signs.”

Purple Moon has not run since winning the Ebor at York in August and big-race rider Kerrin McEvoy is upbeat about his chances.

“In English terms he’s a stayer with a good turn of foot so hopefully he can translate that into the Caulfield Cup,” McEvoy said.

“It sometimes can be difficult for overseas horses to jump out and be prominent and get a good spot and travel well in these types of races but hopefully he can do that.”

Purple Moon faces a maximum of 17 rivals including Yalumba Stakes winner Maldivian as well as ex-British runners Tawqeet and Blue Monday.
