An Australian hospital patient got drunk after consuming six bottles of alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
The 45-year-old man - who had been undergoing medical treatment for alcohol-related gastritis - was found by staff to have a blood-alcohol concentration of more than five times the country's legal driving limit after downing the 375-millilitre bottles of liquid.
Dr. Michael Oldmeadow, an internist at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital, said: "It surprised us that he drank this stuff. It's horrendous. You'd think it would taste pretty bad."
He added that after drinking the gel - which is commonly used to prevent infection among patients - the man was "lucky to survive".
