Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has confirmed at a press conference that independent Wexford TD Liam Twomey has joined Fine Gael.

The move brings the party’s Dáil strength to 32 seats.

The recruitment of Dr Twomey would represent a major boost for the party ahead of a two-day meeting of its TDs and Senators in Kilkenny this week.

Dr Twomey (aged 37) took a seat from Fine Gael at the last general election, when he campaigned on a platform of improving the health services.
