Anglo Irish Bank was the only one of the financial stocks to see a rise - of 19c to €20.16. Bank of Ireland was down 9c to €12.21 after yesterday's announcement of 2,100 job cuts across the group, most of them in Ireland. AIB fell 6c to 15.79 while Irish Life and Permanent was down 2c to €13.83.

Glanbia shares closed up 4c at €2.88 after it confirmed that it has received approval from the Competition Authority to operate the CMP liquid milk, cream and juice-branded business of Cork's Dairygold Co-op.

Building provider CRH shed 24c to close at €20.31.
