Ryanair relieved at averting hijacking

Ryanair’s director of flight operations has said he is relieved and delighted that the company’s security officials foiled an alleged attempt to hijack a plane in Stockholm yesterday evening.

A 29-year-old Swedish-Tunisian man has been charged with planning to hijack the Ryanair flight to London after a handgun was found in his luggage.

The gun was detected before the man boarded the flight.

Ryanair’s David O’Brien said the success of security staff can be attributed to the airline’s decision to use smaller, less busy airports.

“As most people know, we fly to pretty compact airports, which in our opinion lend themselves to efficiency on the one hand, but also to high levels of security because things are a lot more obvious in an airport when you don’t have milling throngs of people,” he said.
