Two French soldiers, part of a peacekeeping force, have been killed in the Ivory Coast, the French defence ministry said today.

The soldiers were killed yesterday, said the ministry, adding that it was waiting for further information about the circumstances of the deaths.

France has around 4,000 soldiers in the Ivory Coast, a former French colony which has suffered during nine months of civil war.

The force was deployed to separate the warring sides and to protect French and other foreign citizens living in the West African nation.
