FF backbenchers delaying dual mandate decision: Fine Gael

Fine Gael spokesperson on the Environment, Bernard Allen, has said that any announcement on the end of the dual mandate system must be introduced in the context of wider local government reform.

Fine Gael spokesperson on the Environment, Bernard Allen, has said that any announcement on the end of the dual mandate system must be introduced in the context of wider local government reform.

He was speaking after newspaper reports this morning suggested that the dual mandate system is about to be scrapped by the Government.

The dual mandate allows TDs to hold local council seats, thereby receiving two incomes.

The axing of this system would lead to a substantial drop in salary for double-jobbing politicians.

However Dep Allen said the Government has been fluffing with the issue for some time and pressure from Fianna Fáil backbenchers could further delay any changes to the system.

"We've been hearing this story for quite some time now and still there's been no decision form Government. I have raised this matter in the Dáil since September and the Minister hasn't given a straight answer to a straight question," said Dep Allen.

"I believe he is still agonising over the decision and he is coming under a lot of pressure from Fianna Fáil backbenchers who are opposed to this move"
