Argentina's congress has appointed Adolfo Rodriguez as interim President until elections take place in March.

His appointment, replacing Fernando De La Rua, is aimed at stabilising the troubled nation which was rocked by waves of rioting last week.

Mr De La Rua had resigned when protests against austerity measures introduced to save the country from economic crisis turned violent.

Twenty-five people were killed in the rioting in the capital Buenos Aires and the town of Cordoba.
