Israeli tanks and army bulldozers have entered a Palestinian-controlled area of the Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border.
Israel has confirmed a brief pinpoint operation to demolish a Palestinian police station and said it was over.
The incursion was into an area near Gaza International Airport, just outside the Palestinian town of Rafah.
A senior Palestinian security official says three Israeli tanks and a bulldozer rumbled into the area, which is under full Palestinian control, and demolished a Palestinian border police outpost.
An Israeli army spokesman has stated two bulldozers, a tank, and another armored vehicle entered Palestinian territory to demolish that had been the source of gunfire earlier in the day.
There have been no reports of injuries.
Earlier in the day, Palestinians fired six mortar shells toward the Jewish settlement of Newe Dekalim and a nearby army post, causing no injuries or damages.
Israeli officials had said they might keep the area for months, and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has come under scathing criticism for ordering the hasty withdrawal less than a day later.
Officials have denied they have wilted under US pressure
