A bomb explosion seriously wounded the police chief of south Lebanon early today as he was driving through the eastern city of Zahle.

A bomb explosion seriously wounded the police chief of south Lebanon early today as he was driving through the eastern city of Zahle.

The blast blew off the right foot of Brigadier Jean Akl, the head of the Internal Security Forces in south Lebanon, and heavily wounded his left foot, security officials in Beirut and Zahle said.

The officials said he was in a stable condition in Zahle hospital.

It was not immediately clear whether the bomb had been planted in the military jeep or on the road, an official said.
