Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is today expected to announce the establishment of a committee to look into the possibility of extending Fianna Fáil into the North.
Mr Ahern will give details of the special group, which will be chaired by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern, at the party’s Co Wicklow think-in, a Fianna Fail spokeswoman confirmed.
The committee will explore how the party could advance as a political grouping in the north.
“There is already individual (Fianna Fáil party) membership in the north, but this is looking to where we can move onto from that,” a party spokeswoman said.
The think-in at the Druids Glen hotel will run for two days.
In addition to the key-note address, the party’s general secretary Sean Dorgan will focus on the next local elections and candidate selection.
A number of other speakers will address delegates, including Minister for Finance Brian Cowen and clinical psychologist Dr Tony Bates, who will talk about empowering communities to support young people.
Dr Bates is an expert in the area of youth suicide and is expected to touch on this topic during his address.
