Boy dies while playing on roller door

An 11-year-old boy died after becoming trapped as he played on a powered roller door, police said today.

Patrick Morris is thought to have been playing with friends on a roller-shutter door which was opening and closing to let cars go through.

As it opened, Patrick, of Partridge Street, Stretford, Manchester, became trapped in the door’s mechanism.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation following the ‘‘tragic’’ accident, which happened at Trafford House on Chester Road, Stretford, shortly after 6.30 last night.

Inspector Eric Holliday said: ‘‘Patrick’s death is a tragic accident, for it appears he has been caught in the mechanism of the door and died as a result.

‘‘It appears that the children had been trying to ride on the door, when it opened to let a car go through, but Patrick had become trapped.

‘‘I would like to warn both children and parents of the dangers of playing with mechanical equipment, and Patrick’s death is testament to the fatal consequences it can cause.

‘‘Please be aware of where you children are playing and take this opportunity to warn them of the dangers they face if they don’t play safely.’’
