At least 10 people have died and three are missing after heavy rains and flooding in north-east Romania, authorities said today.

Emergency situations spokeswoman Dorina Lupu, from Botosani county, said torrential rains last night led to floods that killed six people, most from the town of Dorohoi. She says a 15-year-old boy is missing, and hundreds of people have been evacuated.

In the neighbouring county of Suceava, authorities said that four people died overnight in the flooding and two are missing.

Bridges and roads have been damaged, crops have been washed away and hundreds of houses are affected. Romania’s rail link to neighbouring Ukraine has been shut down and dozens of villages have no electricity.
