Same again for England

Scrum-halves Matt Dawson and Kyran Bracken have both been named in England’s 22 for their World Cup showdown with South Africa on Saturday.

Scrum-halves Matt Dawson and Kyran Bracken have both been named in England’s 22 for their World Cup showdown with South Africa on Saturday.

Both players began the week with injury problems, Dawson nursing a hamstring problem and Bracken suffering from back trouble.

As a result, Bath scrum-half Martyn Wood was flown out as a precautionary measure, but Dawson will start and Bracken will be on the bench in the team and replacements announced by England boss Clive Woodward today.

Flanker Richard Hill, who suffered a minor hamstring strain in the 84-6 victory over Georgia last Sunday, is also fit to take his place in an unchanged team.

There are two changes with Leicester hooker Dorian West taking over from Mark Regan and Martin Corry deputising for second row and broken-toe victim Danny Grewcock.

England must beat the Springboks if they want to finish top of Pool C and open up a route to the final in Sydney next month without meeting either New Zealand or Australia.

Defeat would send the RBS 6 Nations champions into a probably quarter-final appointment with the All Blacks in Melbourne on November 8.

England team to play South Africa in World Cup Pool C at Subiaco Oval, Perth on Saturday:

J Lewsey (Wasps); J Robinson (Sale Sharks), W Greenwood (Harlequins), M Tindall (Bath), B Cohen (Northampton); J Wilkinson (Newcastle), M Dawson (Northampton); T Woodman (Gloucester), S Thompson (Northampton), P Vickery (Gloucester), M Johnson (Leicester, captain), B Kay (Leicester), R Hill (Saracens), N Back (Leicester), L Dallaglio (Wasps).

Replacements: D West (Leicester), J Leonard (Harlequins), M Corry (Leicester), L Moody (Leicester), K Bracken (Saracens), P Grayson (Northampton), D Luger (Perpignan).
