Britain's Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott turned action hero to rescue a stricken kayaker over the weekend, it was reported today.

Mr Prescott was visiting the rapids in Bala, north Wales, when he spotted a man who had fallen from his boat.

Aided by his bodyguard, Prescott pulled the concussed and bloodied kayaker from the water.

The politician told the Daily Post: “I went up at 4.30pm on Friday to look at the course. While we were standing there, this fellow fell out and gashed his forehead.

“He was trying to get to the bank and one of the approaching rafts landed on top of him. He got to the quay and one of my Special Branch guys ran over and grabbed hold of one side. I got hold of the other and we pulled him ashore.

“He was a little bit concussed. I mopped the blood from his face and let him rest for a few minutes and we carried him to the first aid place and other people took over.”

The kayaker’s identity is not known, although he is thought to be in his 40s and from East Anglia.

Mr Prescott did not let the incident worry him and later donned a lifejacket and helmet before taking a white water raft trip.
