At least two people were feared dead after an airliner crashed on take-off at Madrid airport today, Spanish reports said.

The plane, a scheduled Spanair flight to Gran Canaria, burst into flames after leaving the runway, Spain’s El Mundo newspaper said.

Around 160 passengers were on board and 20 more of them were injured in the accident.

Some observers said one of the left engines caught fire as the plane accelerated causing it to swing off track.

Airport fire services were at the scene of the crash in minutes.
