Bill Clinton's dog Buddy has died after being hit by a car near his New York state home.

Bill Clinton's dog Buddy has died after being hit by a car near his New York state home.

The retriever was hit on a road in Chappaqua where the ex-president lives.

Clinton's spokeswoman, Julia Payne, said neither the ex-president nor his wife were available for comment.

In a statement, the Clintons said: "We are deeply saddened by Buddy's death. He was a loyal companion and brought us much joy. He will truly be missed."

Police said it was unclear whether Buddy was being walked at the time of the accident or had escaped from the Clinton home.

He "just darted out in front of a car," said police officer Larry Green.
