Floods triggered by the remnants of Typhoon Durian have killed at least 10 people in northern Vietnam.

Up to 440 millimetres of rain fell between Monday and Wednesday, submerging large areas of some northern provinces.

Nine people were killed in Thai Nguyen province, including six who died when a landslide buried their homes. The other three were washed away by raging flood waters.

The flood was the biggest in more than 40 years in the province. It has destroyed 27 homes and submerged 1,031 others.

More than 3,000 people were evacuated to higher ground.

The floods disrupted Highway 3, which connects Thai Nguyen with Bac Kan. Water levels in the Cau River have now begun gradually falling.

In the neighbouring province of Tuyen Quang, one person was killed and three others are still missing.

That flood submerged 3,700 homes, some under as much as 4 meters of water, and more than 10,000 people were evacuated.

The floods have also affected the northern provinces of Vinh Phuc and Bac Kan, but no casualties or serious damage have been reported.

The torrential rains were triggered by a low pressure area created by the remnants of Typhoon Durian, which hit southern China earlier this week.
