Gardaí are continuing to search an area of wooded ground in south Dublin this morning as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Philip Cairns more than 22 years ago.

The 12-year-old was last seen walking to school in Rathfarnam in October 1986.

Despite numerous Garda appeals, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have never been established.

Yesterday, gardaí said they had identified as new search site near Grange Golf Club in Rathfarnam as a result of recent developments.

An initial search of the site has begun and a full excavation will be carried out over the next few days.
