Bomb squad called to 'G20 protest' flat

British bomb disposal experts will today be sent into a flat at the centre of an alleged terror plot connected to the G20 summit in London this week.

British bomb disposal experts will today be sent into a flat at the centre of an alleged terror plot connected to the G20 summit in London this week.

A number of arrests were made in Plymouth, Devon, between Friday and Sunday after police discovered imitation firearms, makeshift explosive devices and “political literature” while investigating a minor offence of criminal damage.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers found more “firework-like devices” earlier today at a flat in Radnor Place, believed to be the home of one of the suspects, named by sources as Andrew Sprague.

As a precautionary measure, Royal Navy bomb disposal experts will be visiting the premises to ensure the devices are made safe, police said.

Investigations at the premises continue as three men, aged 25, 19 and 16, and a 20-year-old woman, are being held under the Terrorism Act at Launceston police station.

Another 20-year-old woman, also arrested over the weekend, was released without charge late last night but given police bail pending further enquiries in relation to a drugs offence.

Scotland Yard officers said they were liaising with investigators in south-west England over the suspected plot.

One source said the group were political activists who may have aspired to disrupt the G20 summit, but not to injure or kill.

Scotland Yard has issued warnings that protesters are planning to bring the City of London to a standstill with high-profile protests this week.

The G20 summit, which begins at the Excel arena in London’s Docklands on Thursday, has been described by senior officers as the capital’s most challenging police operation for a decade.
