Formula one: Coulthard hopes to stay on top

David Coulthard is on top of the world and has told rival Michael Schumacher he intends staying there.

The Scot had to settle for second place in the San Marino Grand Prix behind Schumacher's younger brother Ralf.

But the six points was enough to take Coulthard level on 26 with his Ferrari foe with four of the 17-race season gone.

"It's disappointing not to win but it's good to be leading the championship with Michael," said the McLaren driver who has finished on the podium in every race so far.

"There is still a long way to go in the championship and clearly Williams are going to be a threat following Ralf's victory.

"I know that if I want to win the title then I have got to keep scoring points, which is what I intend to do.

"I have got myself into a good position now and I want to stay there."

Coulthard's hopes of scoring back-to-back wins after claiming his 11th career pole in scintillating fashion in qualifying were dashed in the opening seconds of yesterday's race on the Italian track.

The 30-year-old saw Schumacher junior blast past him from third spot and the German's BMW powered car was just too quick on the day.
