Greenpeace protesters start to leave oil rig

Three Greenpeace protesters have left an oil exploration rig in the North of Scotland.

Three Greenpeace protesters have left an oil exploration rig in the North of Scotland.

And six other protesters are expected to leave the rig in the Cromarty Firth shortly.

They spent the night secured to the semi-submersible rig in opposition to Conoco Jet's alleged failure to use green fuels.

It is understood that oil company Conoco Jet, which operates the Drill Star rig, has obtained a court order to stop the demonstration.

Greenpeace says the protest did stop the rig from moving for 24 hours and publicised the case.

Although, Conoco Jet says their actions were dangerous and irresponsible.

Police detained 17 demonstrators on April 1 as they tried to board inflatable boats at Nairn Harbour in the Moray Firth.

A spokesman for the Northern Constabulary said: "Throughout the operation the primary concern has been the safety of protesters, oil workers and police officers."
