Rape Crisis Centre welcomes marital rape verdict

The Rape Crisis Centre has welcomed the conviction of a Sligo man for the rape of his wife, the first such conviction in the history of the Irish State.

The Rape Crisis Centre has welcomed the conviction of a Sligo man for the rape of his wife, the first such conviction in the history of the Irish State.

The 46-year-old builder was found guilty of marital rape at the couple’s home in Sligo in July 1997.

Muireann O’Bhroinn, a spokesperson for the Rape Crisis Centre, said:

"It’s excellent news for women that they can see from this case that the law will protect them against sexual assault in marriage as well as outside of it."
